Tory in new drugs row

The Daily Record, 6th November 2005

DAVID Cameron was yesterday branded"irresponsible"for saying ecstasy should be downgraded.

The Tory leadership front- runner said it was senseless to put the currently Class A drug in the same bracket as heroin.

He said it should follow cannabis in being reclassified to make warnings more credible.

Home Secretary Charles Clarke said: "There is still much to learn about the harm ecstasy can cause. We believe it would be irresponsible to consider reclassifying it."

Cameron, 39, responded: "Frankly I do not care what other people think about it."

His comments came on the day leadership ballots were sent to 300,000 Tory party members
