Conservatives: Unclear policies need to be addressed

The Conservative Party, Press Release, 1st August 2006

The Conservative party has criticised the government's lack of clarity in its drugs classification system, and has called for any new system to give strong and effective guidance.

Shadow home affairs minister Edward Garnier said he would study "in detail" the findings of the science and technology committee's report, which has said the current drugs classification system should be scrapped and replaced with a scale that rates substances on the basis of health and social risks.

"What is and has been apparent for some time is the lack of clarity in this government's policy on illegal drugs. The downgrading of cannabis sent out the message that it was pretty harmless and will have encouraged youngsters to take it up," he said.

"It is vital that we have strong and effective measures warning children of the dangers of drugs devoid of any confusion."
