The Hempire News - February 03

Cafe News
We've hit a snag; in order to be able to sell hot food we need an A3 licence. But this is not new information. What is, is the fact the local council aren't giving out A3 licences without a fight. So we've now got to enter an applications process that could take a year and doesn't guarantee us the licence we want.

So why not find a different place? Most importantly because this is the place we want. It's the right size, in the right location and run by a landlord we have a good relationship with. If things go wrong we will find somewhere else. But we've got our hearts set on making this place work. So make it work we will.

Legalisation News

Word reaches us of a number of cafés springing up around the place (Liverpool, Acrington, Camden, Leeds) and of course Chris Baldwin in Worthing is still giving everything he's got. The Association of Chief Police Officers are due to release details of how they will police reclassification shortly and a recent Daily Mail poll had nearly 95% of respondents in favour of legal cannabis for medical users. Change is happening.

Get Involved

The annual cannabis march and festival is under attack. The Tory controlled Lambeth council want to up the fees from £2,500 last year to £24,000 this year. The festival is a highlight of the year and the only chance we UK smokers get to show how we feel about the law. Write a quick email to regulatoryservices@lambeth.gov.uk and let them know why this great event should continue.

News Stories of the Month

US Ganja Guru Ed Rosenthal was found guilty of cultivating cannabis in what jury members described as a "Kangaroo Court". What irked the jurors was they weren't told Old Ed was growing for people in desperate medical need and had been given authority by the local council to do so. Now they're saying the Government deceived them and are demanding a retrial.

The UK cannabis economy is said to be worth £11bn according to a recent study. Not just because of all the dope we buy but because of the Rizlas, chocolate and Playstation games we get through whilst high. The study says cannabis smokers don't like "shiny, noisy environments with lots of choices such as McDonald's". You'll be glad to hear we wont be taking any design tips from Ronald.

No more jokes about Belgium. The lucky Flems will be legally allowed to have the drug for personal use and will be allowed to cultivate one plant. They wont be allowed cannabis cafés though. Yet.
