Unfortunately, and after a long battle, the Dutch Experience in Stockport has now closed. This means there are currently no out-and-out cannabis cafés in the UK.
Instead, we are seeing the rise of places where you can go to meet like-minded individuals. These aren't cannabis cafés but places where smokers congregate.
These cafés remain within the law because at no point do they knowingly permit the consumption of cannabis on their premises. Anyone knowingly permitting cannabis to be consumed (which includes parents of young adults, landlords, prison governors etc), can face up to 14 years imprisonment.
It is, of course, extraordinarily difficult to distinguish between someone making an illegal joint and someone using a legally available herbal mixture - since they both look and smell alike. Therefore, when in one of these establishments please make sure you NEVER ask the proprietor if you can smoke cannabis and ONLY EVER use legal herbs for relaxation.
We are sure you would not want to see anyone who has made a space for you to enjoy end up in jail.
Given the recent action by the police, we think it prudent to not list the addresses of these establishments at this moment. We hope to rectify this as the law becomes more relaxed.
If this bothers you, please write to your MP and tell them why we need cannabis cafes. Your letter will make a difference. Get tips on letter writing here.
Following complaints by residents about street dealing on Landour Road, the police are actively preventing any use of cannabis at Cafe Cairo. Please don't go there expecting to be able to smoke. It's still a great place though and well worth a visit.
If you know of any such establishments in your area please let us know. If you are connected with any of the above establishments and wish to have your name removed from this list please also let us know.
